Venezuela is a South American country known for its rich oil deposits and the many beauty queens who continually win the world beauty pageants. Unfortunately, it is also known for its high rate of violent crimes. On the January 6, a former Miss Venezuela Monica Spear was killed in robbery and became the latest victim of one such crime.

Monica Spear, her Irish ex-husband Thomas Henry Berry along with their young daughter were on a vacation in the mountains of western Venezuela. They were on their way back to Caracas in their car when some people managed to puncture their car and tried to rob them. This happened on a highway which is not frequented by many. When their car was disabled, two tow trucks came in swiftly and their car was loaded onto one of the trucks. When the couple realized what was going on, they locked themselves inside the car to foil the attempted robbery. However, their fate was sealed when the assailants fired at least six shots killing both of them instantly and injuring their daughter. The killing of Monica Spear and Thomas Henry Berry followed a structure of attacks carried out late in the night by incapacitating cars with impediments placed on highways. They were murdered at around10:30 pm, somewhere between the coastal town of Puerto Cabello, and the state capital Valencia, when they were on a poorly maintained part of freeway.

Spear won the title of Miss Venezuela in the year 2004 and in the following year’s Miss Universe pageant, she was the fifth runner up. Subsequently, she acted in many soap operas, including “Pasion Prohibida” that is broadcast on US-based Telemundo network. The entire nation of Venezuela is mourning the passing away of their beautiful daughter who died an untimely death.
