Kira Kaznatsev Crowned as the New Miss America

New York has scored a hat-trick when it comes to producing Miss America, as for the the third time in a row, a girl from the state has won the coveted title. On Sunday night, Miss New York Kira Kaznatsev got the better of her competition to bag the pageant which was televised nationally. The widely watched event was held at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Kaznatsev received the crown from last year’s winner Miss New York, Nina Davuluri.

Kira Kaznatsev successfully managed to mesmerize the judges as well as the audience in all the departments. The crowd went berserk when she sang the popular Pharrell Williams song “Happy” during the talent performance. She sung the song sitting on the stage cross-legged using a red plastic cup as a prop. The judges were impressed the most when she highlighted the issue of combating sexual assault in the military.

The first runner-up was Courtney Paige Garrett from Virginia. Others in the top five include Miss Massachusetts Lauren Kuhn, Miss Arkansas Aston Jo Campbell and Miss Florida Victoria Cowen. The staging of the beauty pageant comes as a welcome relief as the venue of the event was recently in the news for all the wrong reasons like a domestic violence case concerning an NFL star, mass shutting down of casinos and thousands of workers getting laid-off.

With the Miss America crown, Kira also gets a $50000 scholarship which she has plans to invest on her law school education. Kazantsev now is all set to start a program this week that will require her to travel more than 20,000 miles a month. Jacky Arness from North Dakota was chosen by her peers as Miss Congeniality.

For three continuous hours, America got the opportunity to witness a very different Atlantic City. Thanks to the Miss America pageant the city was presented with an upbeat view as this was the place where the pageant first began in 1921.
