An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 hit the coast of southern Mexico on Thursday, May 8. The epicenter of the earthquake was somewhere in the state of Guerrero, which is just 15 miles off the southern Pacific coast. Tremors were felt as far as the capital Mexico City, as it rattled buildings and led to evacuation of people from their homes and offices. However, there were no reports of any serious damage or deaths caused due to the earthquake. People were expecting a tsunami alert to be issued as the epicenter was very close to the ocean, but there was no such alert.
This quake follows a series of earthquakes in the Latin American region along the Pacific coast in recent times. The holiday resort of Acapulco which was just 60 miles away from the epicenter reported no severe damage. Mexico is prone to earthquakes, but people were relieved as this one caused no major loss of life or property.
In another similar incident, an earthquake of magnitude 5 struck the Nawabshah district of Pakistan in the early hours on Friday, May 9. Although the quake that hit was a mild one, but it still caused a lot of damage to property as roofs of several buildings collapsed on the people, leading to many of them getting injured. According to the initial reports, a total of 70 injuries was reported with only one death. The epicenter of this earthquake was somewhere 27 km north-east of Nawabshah.
An emergency was declared and rescue operations began immediately with security personnel shifting the injured people to the nearest hospitals. A massive earthquake hit Pakistan just last year which led to the formation of a new island off the coast of Baluchistan in the Arabian Sea.
