Miss Nevada Wins the Miss USA Crown

24-year-old Miss Nevada Nia Sanchez came on top among the 51 contestants from all the different states to win the Miss USA 2014 crown on Sunday night. With this title, she has become the 63rd winner of the Miss USA beauty pageant. Audra Mari from North Dakota came second in the closely fought contest between America’s most beautiful women. The entire event was three hours long as it took place in Baton Rouge Civic Center in Louisiana. Last year’s winner Erin Brady from Connecticut passed on her crown to Nia Sanchez.

Nia Sanchez from Las Vegas though had to face stiff competition from Miss Georgia Tiana Griggs, Miss Iowa Carlyn Bradarich, Miss Louisiana Brittany Guidry and Miss Florida Brittany Oldehoff. All these women were judged on swimsuit, evening wear and interviews. For the first time in the history of this event, a contestant was given a lifeline when Carlyn Bradarich was given a second chance after she was eliminated as she got the maximum number of votes on Twitter from the viewing audience.

With this victory, Sanchez will now be representing the United States in the Miss Universe contest which is going to be held later this year. During her interview, Sanchez was asked by Rumer Willis about the increasing number of women in US becoming victims of sexual assault. She answered her with full confidence about the issue, by stressing on bringing more awareness and encouraging the women to defend themselves under such circumstances.

Sexual crime was the talk of the day as one of the contestant, Miss Pennsylvania Valerie Gatto declaring to the world that she was born after her mother was raped in Pittsburgh while on her way back to home from work and became pregnant. Judges for the show were Barbara Palacios, Lance Bass, Melissa Peterman, Karl Malone, Ian Zeiring and Rumer Willis. The show was hosted by Giuliana Rancic and Thomas Roberts.

Nia Sanchez though stole the show as she is not only a beauty queen, but a fourth-degree black belt holder in Taekwondo. Sanchez’s name was announced in the list of the top 20 soon after the show got underway. After the second round, the list was halved to just 10 and the remaining had to compete in the evening gown competition. During this event, the contestants had more of an opportunity to showcase their own style and personality. In the end, Sanchez proved to be too good for others.
