The nominations for the 86th edition of the annual Academy Awards or Oscars as known popularly were declared by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the year 2014. As it happens every year, there were some surprises in terms of somebody missing out and some very unexpected films getting the nod ahead of others as well as some expected nominations. There are a total of nine movies which have been nominated for the best picture category and many were disappointed when ‘Rush’ missed out as there was a possibility of tenth movie to get nominated.
‘American Hustle’,’Gravity’ and ’12 Years a Slave’ are the three movies with leading nominations. For the best director category, the usual names Martin Scorsese and David O Russell have been accompanied with the crowd favorite Alfonso Cuaron. For the best actor category, this time everyone seems to be backing Leonardo Di Caprio who deserves an Oscar for his performance in ‘ The Wolf of Wall Street’, but giving him competition are Christian Bale and Matthew McConaughey among others. Tom Hanks however missed out on a nomination as many were betting on him to add another Oscar to his cabinet for his performance as Captain Philips.
In the best actress category, there were no surprises as all the expected ones were able to get the nominations with Cate Blanchett for ‘Blue Jasmine’ and Sandra Bullock for ‘Gravity’ being the favorites. Meryl Streep continues to break her own record with an 18th nomination. In the supporting actress category, Jennifer Lawrence and Julia Roberts are the only well known faces having won the award before. The Coen Brothers’ dark comedy ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’ got the nomination in the category of Cinematography and Sound mixing. 2013 was a year which saw some very good movies and it was no surprise that some deserving movies and performances missed out on getting nominated.
