The 2014 PGA championships which kicked off on Friday morning at the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky saw Englishman Lee Westwood take the lead with a total of five birdies in the last six holes. It was a clam and muggy day at the golf club as Westwood fired a 6 under par to finish on top along side Americans Ryan Palmer and Kevin Chappell. The former world number one Westwood was quite pleased with his performance as he fired nine birdies overall along with a double and a bogey.

Rory McIlroy, the British Open Champion and the favorite to win the tournament is out there to win his third consecutive PGA title and is currently seventh on the leaderboard after an impressive eight birdie 66 opening. He made an incredible comeback and is in the reckoning to bag the title. Others who managed to put up an impressive performance include American Jim Furyk, Italian Edoardo Molinari and Swede Henrik Stenson. Top guns like former world number one Adam Scott, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods had to struggle as they were not able to perform at their best.

Woods who suffered from back spasm just a few days ago at the Bridgestone Invitational pronounced himself fit to play on Wednesday as he said that he was totally pain-free. He was not expected to participate in the event. However, he was not fully comfortable and looked very rusty as he struggled his way to a 3-over 74. He had a total of 30 putts, with four bogeys and a single birdie. Woods whose last major triumph was at the 2008 US Open is stuck on 14 majors. His shooting left a lot to be desired and many are doubting his ability to win another major.

With still 54 holes left to play, anyone from the top 20 can take home the title.
