Rory McIlroy is virtually in the zone since his break-up with tennis star Caroline Wozniacki in May 2014 as he continued his fine form into the PGA Championship and won his second major title this Sunday. Since his separation, Rory has concentrated a lot on his game which has made him climb to the top of the rankings with overwhelming form.
It was not at all easy for the 25-year-old Rory thanks to a very tight finish that saw four players vying for the title on a cloudy Sunday evening at the Valhalla Golf club in Louisville, Kentucky. It was the most peculiar ending to a tournament as the players lost two hours of play because of a rain delay and it was getting very dark. However, Rory, who was behind three shots at the back nine, put in all his effort to take the lead. From the fairway bunker he hit a 9-iron for birdie on the 17th hole and got a two-shot lead. During this time, both Rickie Fowler and Phil Mickelson were just two shots behind him and were still in the game.
The PGA though allowed Rory to take his second shot as both Mickelson and Fowler were made to wait which apparently didn’t go down well with the two players. However, it didn’t affect the result of the game as both Mickelson and Fowler missed their chance to take the lead subsequently. Mickelson finished as the runner-up for the ninth time in his career. Fowler was third and got the dubious distinction of being the only player in the history of professional golf to finish at the top five at all the four majors in a calendar year without winning a single one.
With this victory, McIlroy has become the fourth youngest player in this century to win four majors. The other players who have achieved the same feat are Tiger Woods, Bobby Jones and Jack Nicklaus.
