Lorde Bags Two Billboard Music Awards

17-year-old Kiwi singer and songwriter Lorde took everyone by surprise by bagging two awards at the Billboard Music awards, which was held in Las Vegas. Lorde whose real name is Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor was born and brought up in New Zealand. She won the award for the Top Rock Song for her debut single Royals and for the Top New Artist.

Lorde played a prepared speech on the phone after winning the award as she didn’t want to mess things up. She was very grateful to the music industry in the United States and paid tribute to the industry which gave her this opportunity at such an early phase in her life. Lorde overcame stiff competition from other popular young artists like Ariana Grande, Bastille and Capital Cities among others to get the Top New Artist award. The award for the Top Female Artist though went to Katy Perry.

Among the male contenders, it was Justin Timberlake who aced the award ceremony as he bagged a total of seven awards. Apart from the two awards, Lorde was also nominated for Top Radio Song Artist, Top Rock Album, Top Radio Artist among many other categories.

At the awards ceremony, she performed on stage her latest single Tennis Court alongside other big names in the music industry like Justin Timberlake and Katy Perry. This song features in Lorde’s debut album Pure Heroine which was released last year.

Lorde has managed to get tagged as one of the biggest newbie singer by Billboard. Most of her songs are inspired by electro-pop with the focus being mostly on her voice instead of the musical instruments. Lorde’s style of music has been classified as a mix of club-ready electro-rock and confessional bedroom pop. She has grabbed stardom at a very young age and has a bright future ahead of her.
